03 // PRECISION GRADING
GRADING & SITE
PREPARATION
Water flows where we tell it to. Proper grading is the difference between a dry foundation and a flooded one.
Using advanced laser-grading technology, we ensure your site is leveled to within a fraction of an inch for proper drainage and structural stability.
ROUGH GRADING
Establishing the basic shape and slope of your land. We move bulk material to create the proper drainage swales and building elevations before construction begins.
FINAL GRADING
The finishing touch. We spread topsoil and smooth the surface to a precise tolerance, creating a perfect seedbed for sod or hydroseeding.
PAD INSTALLATION
Building a stable base for your structure. We import fill dirt, moisture condition it, and compact it in lifts to prevent future settling.
FOOTER INSTALLS
Excavating precise trenches for concrete footings. We ensure square corners, clean bottoms, and correct depths for inspection approval.
04 // WATER MANAGEMENT
DRAINAGE & STORMWATER
SOLUTIONS
Uncontrolled water is the #1 enemy of your property. We install custom drainage
systems to capture runoff, prevent erosion, and keep your basement dry.
FRENCH DRAIN
INSTALLATION
Subsurface drainage systems designed to intercept water before it reaches your foundation. We use heavy-duty corrugated pipe and clean washed gravel for maximum flow.
CULVERT
PIPES
Installing and replacing driveway culverts to ensure proper ditch flow. We size them correctly to handle heavy rain events and prevent driveway washouts.
STORMWATER
MANAGEMENT
Comprehensive solutions for large-scale runoff. From retention ponds to directional swales, we regrade your land to move water away from critical areas.
05 // ACCESS & INFRASTRUCTURE
DRIVEWAY
INSTALLATION
A driveway is only as good as its sub-base. We excavate soft spots, install heavy-duty geotechnical fabric, and compact crushed stone in layers so your driveway doesn’t rut or wash out.
GRAVEL DRIVEWAYS
Cost-effective and durable. We install multi-layer gravel driveways using #57 stone or crusher run, properly crowned to shed water and prevent potholes.
PROPERTY ACCESS ROADS
Heavy-duty farm lanes and construction entrances. We build roads capable of supporting loaded dump trucks, timber equipment, and farm machinery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Straight answers. No contractor double-talk
What areas do you service?
We’re based in Farnham, VA and serve the Northern Neck, including Warsaw, Callao, Heathsville, Kilmarnock, Irvington, White Stone, Reedville, Lancaster, and Montross. If you’re nearby but not listed, send your address and we’ll confirm.
What services does Riverside Excavation provide?
We handle the work that sets the foundation for everything else: excavation, grading and site prep, drainage solutions, land and lot clearing/forestry mulching, demolition, driveway work, and shoreline cleanup. If it involves moving earth, fixing water flow, or prepping a site, it’s probably in our wheelhouse.
Do I need to call 811 before excavation or grading?
Yes. Utility locating is required before digging. In Virginia, excavators must notify the one-call center (811) before starting excavation so utilities can be marked. We’ll coordinate timing with you, but if you’ve already called, even better.
Do I need permits for my project?
Sometimes. Permits depend on the job and where it’s located. For example, work that affects a state road right-of-way (like a driveway entrance) may require a VDOT land use permit, and some projects may need county approvals. We’ll tell you what’s required after we review your site and scope.
ARE YOU LICENSED AND INSURED?
Yes. We’re licensed and insured, and we run professional job sites with safety in mind from day one.
Do you provide free estimates?
We provide quotes based on the project details. Most jobs start with a quick review of your address, photos (if available), and what you’re trying to build or fix. If we need to see grades, drainage flow, access, or soil conditions, we’ll schedule a site visit.
How is pricing determined for excavation, grading, or drainage work?
Pricing usually depends on access to the site, how much material needs moved, soil conditions, drainage complexity, haul-off needs, and time/equipment required. Two “same size” projects can price very differently based on what we uncover on-site.
What happens to debris, stumps, or excavated soil?
Depends on your preference and what the job requires. We can haul off, stockpile on-site, or spread/grade material where appropriate. For clearing jobs, we can also discuss options like mulching vs. removal.
How soon can you start, and how long will my project take?
Scheduling depends on workload and weather, but most jobs follow the same rhythm: site review → utility marking → scheduling → production. Smaller jobs can be quick turnarounds; larger site work is planned in phases so you aren’t stuck waiting on the next trade.
What do you need from me to give an accurate quote?
A great quote starts with:
- Project address
- What you’re trying to accomplish (build pad, driveway, drainage fix, clearing, etc.)
- Photos/video of the site
- Any known constraints (wet areas, limited access, existing structures, timelines)
